Canoesmx.jpgOur Riverplay courses have been designed for a variety of Adirondack kayaking and whitewater paddling abilities, from someone who has never been in a kayak/canoe to the intermediate paddler. These innovative rafting and kayaking courses are two days of comprehensive instruction, but you may add up to three more days to any of our Riverplay courses.

Each course is taught by one of our top quality, knowledgeable instructors, who have not forgotten what it was like to be a paddling student themselves. Instruction begins on one of the many lakes in our area and progresses to the Hudson River, Schroon River or Sacandaga River. Riverplay I

This two-day course is the perfect instructional program for the beginner canoe or white water kayaking student.  Riverplay I is also the course for you if you are switching the type of boat you paddle or if you have not paddled in the past two years.

This two-day instruction will set you on your way to white water kayaking/canoeing.  Topics covered will include:  boat and river outfitting, wet exits, boat control, reading whitewater, river running and rescue.  Your course will begin in a comfortable setting on the lake and proceed to the river.  Once you are on the river you will advance from moving current to class II white water.  By the end of your second day you will have the knowledge you need to begin your whitewater paddling career.

Weekends for the year: May 12-13, June 9-10, June 23-24, July 14-15, july 28-29 and August11-12.
Cost: $229 per person/per course. Discounts for groups of 4 or more.

Riverplay II

Riverplay II is for the whitewater paddling student who has completed Riverplay I or has paddled 6-12 times on his/her own in class I-II whitewater.  Where Riverplay I ends Riverplay II begins.  This course will begin with a trip to the lake where you will review your paddle strokes and work on the Eskimo roll.  Next you will head to the river to paddle and play in class I-II whitewater.  The second day of the course will start with more Eskimo rolls and continue with paddling class II-III white water where you will work on boat control and surfing.

Weekends for the year: May 12-13, June 9-10, June 23-24, July 14-15, july 28-29 and August11-12.

Riverplay III

Kayakers2x.jpgRiverplay III is for the white water paddler who has completed Riverplay II or has paddled 15-20 times in class II-III whitewater and can complete an Eskimo roll on flat water.  For this course you will head straight to the river.  On the river you will practice eddy turns, peel outs and ferries, front and side surfing, and getting comfortable with your whitewater Eskimo roll.  This is a great course for the paddler getting ready for a challenging whitewater trip or getting back into paddling after some time off.

Introduction to Kayaking

Not sure if white water kayaking is right for you?  Try our one-day Introduction to Kayaking.  Our friendly, knowledgeable staff will answer your questions and cover basic water safety, paddle strokes, boat outfitting, types and styles, and options in flatwater or whitewater paddling.  After the basics at our base you will proceed to an area lake to get comfortable in your kayak.  If paddling and kayaking is for you, after this introduction you will be ready for Riverplay I. Private Instruction

We understand the desire for some of you to have one-on-one instruction and feedback for your Hudson River rafting, kayaking, or whitewater paddling skills.  Private white water instruction allows for personal attention from your instructor and frequently produces rapid improvement in your paddling skills.  It also allows you the flexibility to work on particular paddling skills at your own pace.

Includes:  Instruction, lunch and equipment
Season:  Mid-April through Mid-October
Cost:  $279/day for 1 person - weekday; $359/day for 1 person - weekend, additional person $69 each.
